The iPod Shuffle – 8Ball & MJG’s “Pimps”

The Smoking Section 25 May 2013, 2:03 am CEST

Why this song? The answer is quite simple, really.

The Womack & Womack sample was flawless. Comin’ Out Hard is still one of the most slept on albums of the past quarter century. The amount of lingo and graphic lessons found in “Pimps” feels as if it were a leftover track from The Mack or Black Dynamite.

And ‘Ball & MJG, to this day in 2013, fail to be mentioned nationwide as an irreplaceable group in rap’s history.

GhostWridah – “Buckets” (Prod. By Don Cannon)

The Smoking Section 25 May 2013, 1:34 am CEST

Before GhostWridah’s Flu Game drops Monday, he unshackles “Buckets,” a no-holds barred banger produced by Don Cannon and a track G.W. explained as being inspired by a “life-altering discussion” between the artist and producer about the music and how he should play his part to continue pushing the genre forward.

The Jet Age Of Tomorrow – The JellyFish Mentality

The Smoking Section 25 May 2013, 12:52 am CEST

Being called an “Odd Future affiliate” is a double-edged sword. On one side, there’s the instant attention and validation that comes with the stamp. The flipside is that other potential listeners tend to take the long route to avoid anything related to OFWGKTA, meaning smaller acts from the Odd tree get overlooked and lack exposure. The latter’s the case for The Internet and The Jet Age Of Tomorrow.

But with all of the features and creativity packed into their third project, The JellyFish Mentality, the duo – consisting of Matt Martians and Pyramid Vritra’s Hal Williams – have a project that’s tough to overlook. To make sure people at least give it a glance, they’ve got a lengthy list of friends adding to the project, ranging from Syd The Kyd, SBTRKT, Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Casey Veggies, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Jesse Boykins III and more.

With the prompting done, go ahead and enjoy the show by stream and downloading below.

Quadron Ft. Kendrick Lamar – “Better Off”

The Smoking Section 25 May 2013, 12:04 am CEST

After dancing up a storm on their terrific first single, “Hey Love,” Quadron slow things down on the latest track from their upcoming album, Avalanche (out June 4). On “Better Off,” producer Robin Hannibal brings the Danish duo closer in step with the smooth, Sade-esque vibes he cooked up with Rhye (a collaboration with Toronto artist Mike Milosh) earlier this year.

Kendrick Lamar, who shows no signs of slowing his feverish collaborative streak, pops up for a guest verse. Turns out he has a bit of a backstory with the duo as well: “Both Robin and Coco were also members of a group called Boom Clap Bachelors, whose song ‘Tiden Flyver’ is the primary source material for ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.’”

Familiarity does indeed increases liking.

Science Says Women With Tramp Stamps Are, Well, Tramps

The Smoking Section 24 May 2013, 11:24 pm CEST

Another day, another study. This time French scientists from Université de Bretagne-Sud conducted research to answer the burning question: Are women with tattoos more likely to sleep with you on the first date? The answer is yes. And if you want your chances to be even greater, science suggests to specifically seek out women with butterfly tattoos. Yeah, because nothing says “whore!” than a free flying creature.

The second part of the experiment surveyed 440 men with a median age of 22.3, asking them if they believed they had a chance with the women, and if they thought they would have sex on the first date. Scientists found their responses to meet their theory: men thought the girls with the butterfly tattoos would agree to a date and would be easier to bed afterwards.

The researchers concluded: “Men see (tattoos) as an advertisement of heightened sexual intent and/or receptivity.”

Azizi Gibson – “SSB (100MPH)”

The Smoking Section 24 May 2013, 10:51 pm CEST

With partly cryptic and full engaging cuts, Azizi Gibson is steadily building anticipation for his Ghost In The Shell tape by simply releasing songs like “SSB (100MPH).” One listen, however, will quickly reveal the meaning of the acronym. PreHistoric Crew member Millz Douglas handles the production, the final result of which has the vibe of an old-school video game. Azizi delivers a lively couple verses, spitting real quick when he isn’t taking a break to encourage his listener to “smoke something, b*tch.”

Statik Selektah Gives A Track-By-Track Break Down Of ‘Extended Play’

XXL 24 May 2013, 10:00 pm CEST

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

Backed by his sample-heavy production, Statik has always focused on delivering an authentic product to the masses. His consistency, along with pairing the right rappers for collaborations, is the reason why his co-sign still carries a lot of weight today. Statik’s fifth studio album Extended Play, is due out June 18, but we caught up with Statik this week at the XXL Freshmen concert to chop it up about how this album was pieced together.

“I look at it is an extended play for the kind of boom-bap hip-hop I have been fighting for the last 18 years I’ve been DJing,” Statik says. “For the last ten years, a certain group of people have been fighting to keep it alive, and now we are back.”

Fans of Statik’s Population Control will be pleased to know he didn’t stray too far away from his usual collaborators. Raekwon, Freddie Gibbs, Termanology, Joell Ortiz and a few others return for the album while Statik also taps some newer MCs in the game, notably Joey Bada$$ and his Pro Era crew, the Flatbush Zombies, Mac Miller and Hit-Boy. Extended Play promises to please fans looking for unadulterated hip-hop. Here, Statik gives us a song-by-song preview of his self-produced album, explaining why guys like Busta Rhymes and Macklemore didn’t make the cut, and how the rest of Extended Play came to be.—As told to Eric Diep (@E_Diep)

Bas Ft. J. Cole & KQuick – “Lit” x ‘Quarter Water Raised Me Vol. II’ Mixtape

The Smoking Section 24 May 2013, 10:00 pm CEST

From an outside-glancing-in perspective, the music industry is a cold world. Countless hours of passion, work and tears go into creating minutes worth of art with the lone premise and prayer being people attach themselves in some manner to the music. If maintaining a fan base is difficult for a well-established artist, imagine the stress it is for one attempting to drill a hole through the game’s glass ceiling. Take Bas, for instance.

Dreamville’s capo to J. Cole’s mob boss, Quarter Water Raised Me Vol. II is the result of setbacks, finding a sound and faith. You don’t know Bas. Most people don’t. But that’s how it was for every artist at some point. He took the risk to shun the expected methods of employment to pursue a dream. A dream without a warranty to fall back on in the event music doesn’t pan out.

Perhaps realizing his destiny is all or nothing at this juncture in his career, Bas’ leaks have arrived with an added dose focus and dedication. It’s also hard not to be motivated, too, when one of your homies is preparing to go head-to-head with Kanye West next month. Bas isn’t where he wants to be, but he’s working to arrive there; a moral many can attest to.

One of QW2′s standouts,”Lit,” showcases the same chemistry “Cousins” did weeks ago on Truly Yours 2. Produced by Cedric Brown and Ron Gilmore, the number samples the R&B Hulk Hogan with a feathery, yet dark hook from KQuick. Bas’ tale of misguided women who, ironically, guided his life to the present and J. Cole’s retrospective account of his memories sinning since birth from Fayetteville, North Carolina, to New York City to traveling the world perform the heavy lifting.

And if Bas plays his hand correctly, perhaps it provides all the motivation needed to dive into the rest of Quarter Water 2.
